Change is Coming to Waters at James Crossing

Lynchburg, Va., (Jan. 12, 2023) - Interior and exterior renovations are not the only things coming to the Waters at James Crossing.

While many apartments are receiving updated interiors, one apartment will be remodeled into a center for after-school tutoring and adult classes. It will serve as the hub for other resources that will be brought in like health services and workforce development. This work will be accomplished by a nonprofit with a proven track record of success.

The Neighborhood Outreach Connection (NOC), a nonprofit organization based in South Carolina, helps people in underserved communities achieve economic independence and personal fulfillment improving their overall quality of life. Founded by Dr. Narendra Sharma in 2008, the NOC has seen great success in Beaufort County, South Carolina, fulfilling its mission of connecting neighborhoods to resources, opportunities, and technology to ultimately set families up for greater economic and social success.

NOC has served over 400 students over the past two years in six learning centers. Through partnerships with health service personnel, NOC has provided medical screening for more than 500 individuals in other partnering locations since 2016. Most importantly, more than 90% of NOC’s total budget supports outreach programs that benefit children and low-income community members.

NOC’s business model has been replicated six times over so far with discussions underway to expand the program to Charleston and Greenville, SC, and Texas. Lynchburg, Virginia will welcome the newest Learning Center in the heart of Waters at James Crossing.

If you drive through the area, you will see contractors working inside and out to provide a better standard of living for area residents. This long-overdue community renovation is being provided by the Atlantic Housing Foundation (AHF) with a $19 million project set to be completed by the summer of 2023. The Atlantic Housing Foundation invited the NOC to become a partner in the growth of this community.

A six-member Board of Directors for NOC at Waters at James Crossing was recently formed—three of whom are professionals who live in the Lynchburg area.
